Our team consists of 15 college aged students and one not-quite-so-college-aged "student" who each senses somewhere deep within that life has to do with inexpressibly much more than ourselves. We have deep hearts that want to run after big, God-sized things.
And sometimes, we're just goofy kids.
WHAT?
Basically, we're ready to be clay in the Potter's hand; Our desire is just that we used by Him to love the people He loves with such great compassion. More specifically, we have several avenues through which God can use the variety of gifts that the people on our team have to offer.
- Building one-room homes for widows who need our help due to a past war in Guatemala.
- Offering a Vacation Bible School for some precious little ones in the area who desperately need to know that they are loved with deep compassion.
- Partnering with an organization called "Happy Feet" to gather, bring shoes to, and wash the feet of Guatemalan children without shoes to call their own.
WHEN?
We'll be boarding a plane from Atlanta on Monday, December 28, 2009 and returning Tuesday, January 5, 2010.
WHERE?
We will spend most of our time in the Lake Atitlan region of Guatemala.
HOW?
We are convinced of the love that the Father has for people and are thankful He wants to use us to be his hands and feet. So the "how"? It starts with a calling. We believe we're called. There is NO way we can serve here without you're prayer and financial support.
WHY?
Oh see, I could spend forever one this one; It is the heart question of this trip, the one we're most eager to answer.
Firstly, each of us has been personally touched by the love of God. He is a compassionate God and wants Guatemala and the whole world to know it.
"The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is FULL of compassion." (Psalm 116:5)
Secondly, we believe that God wants to bestow with grace and intensity this love on all nations.
"Look at the nations and be amazed! Watch and be astounded at what I will do! For I am doing something in your own day, something you wouldn't believe even if someone told you about it." (Habakkuk 1:5b)
Ultimately, our heart is for the glory of our God. Pastor John Piper puts it this way:
“Compassion for the lost is a high and beautiful motive for missionary labor. Without it we lose the sweet humility of sharing a treasure freely received. But we have seen that compassion for people must not be detached from passion for the glory of God.” (John Piper, Let the Nations Be Glad)
With Much Love!
The Guatemala Team
